Charlie Jarzombek began racing in Long Island in the late 1960s, where he dominated at several tracks. He was a 5-time champion at Riverhead Raceway (1967, 1974, 1976, 1977, 1978) and a 3-time champion at both Islip (1972, 1978, 1980) and Freeport (1974, 1975, 1976) speedways. He would travel to big shows in New England when his schedule allowed, like the night he scored a Yankee-All Star League win at Waterford in 1977.
By the 1980’s, the began to compete in New England on a more regular basis. According to his brother & longtime racing partner Rick, the team began competing in New England because, “We wanted to compete against the very best, and the very best modified competition at the time was in New England and upstate New York”.
The team took New England by storm, winning features the first time out at both Stafford and Seekonk Speedways. At Stafford Speedway, Chargin’ Charlie scored 10 career wins and the 1985 Modified Championship. He also scored multiple victories at Thompson Speedway.
Jarzombek was part of the NASCAR Modified Tour when it was formed in 1985. Although he only raced part time on the tour, still won 3 times each during both the 1985 and 1986 seasons.
Jarzombek passed away from injuries sustained during an accident in the Cardinal Classic Winn-Dixie 500 event at Martinsville Speedway on March 22, 1987, at the height of his career. He was only 44 years old.
