CLASS OF 2011

Maine’s Russ Nutting started racing in 1957 and won the first race he entered. During his career he captured an estimated 225 feature victories wheeling everything from NESMRA super modifieds to NASCAR late models. He raced on dirt and asphalt speedways throughout New England and Canada.

He won 12 races at Oxford Plains Speedway plus a track championship in 1961. He also earned championships at Arundel Speedway (1965) and then later multiple titles at Hudson Speedway (1999, 2003 and 2004).

After concluding his driving career, Nutting remained close to the sport as a crew chief for Dale Shaw on the NASCAR North Tour. He also served as a Technical Inspector at various speedways in Maine and New Hampshire, most notably at Star Speedway from 1994-2006, but also at Beech Ridge Speedway (1958-1960), Oxford Plains Speedway (1991-1993) and Lee USA Speedway (1970).

Nutting was a machinist by trade and lived in Limerick, ME for most of his life. He was fiercely independent racer, and was known for consistently constructing and campaigning cutting-edge equipment, a trait that continued for his over 5-decades of involvement in the sport.

He was inducted into the Maine Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2008.
