Dave Alkas

Dave Alkas started racing in 1962 after he & friend Jack Michalski built a 1940 Chevy sedan to compete at Joe Tinty’s Plainville Stadium.  A longtime Plainville standout, Dave Alkas won 6 track championships there in a 10 year period.  Alkas is the track’s career wins leader and even took down 11 feature wins in one season alone.

Arguably the most accomplished racer in Plainville Stadium history, Alkas was one of only a handful of drivers who could work their way through the field on the flat quarter-mile bullring.

Alkas would win regularly in the 1970s Wednesday night open competition races at Plainville, beating visitors like Ed Flemke, Ron & Ken Bouchard, Bob Stefanik, and Ron Wyckoff.  Wyckoff once called Dave “a  real sportsman and a true gentleman.”

Dave branched out to compete at the Eastern States Fairgrounds, and Riverside Park Speedway.  In 1966, he raced against a field of modified greats at Eastern States, and finishing runner-up to Billy Greco.  That same year, he teamed with Ronnie Mayer in the Riverside 500, once again finishing second to Greco & Buddy Krebs.
