The late Howard Brown, a former Golden Gloves boxer, began racing jalopies at the Newmarket Speedway in New Hampshire. From jalopies to Class B Bombers, late models, cutdowns, modifieds, and super modifieds, if it had 4 wheels, Howard Brown raced it. He became known for getting the most out of his equipment, competing against drivers with more financial resources, and beating most of them regularly. Three of his most recognizable cars were the 069 bomber for “Hummer” Harvey, the #77 “Epping Express” owned by Loren Valley & Dan Dexter, and Tim Trefethen’s #77 supermodified.

In 1965, Howard won the Class B track championships at both Hudson Speedway and The Pines, in a year in which he won 22 features, including 6 in a row, while competing at The Pines, Hudson, Dover, and Lee. 1970 saw Brown win the season opening super modified feature at the Stafford Motor Speedway in April, and then finish the season with a feature win at the World Series at Thompson in October. He won three Star Speedway championships, in 1971, ’72, and ’76.

In 1977, Howard won the 150 lap NESMRA Canadian-American International Classic. He retired in 1986 as the third winningest New England Super Modified Racing Association feature winner ever, and was a 3-time NESMRA points champion.

Howie Brown passed away in late October of 1987 after a battle with cancer.
