Ed Stone was a prominent figure in the early days of New England racing. He was influential in the formation of both open wheel & stock car organizations.

He was also a successful car owner, winning 3 straight NEMA Offy Championships. The first two came with Bill Eldridge behind the wheel (1957-1958) and then Al Pillion drove Stone’s car to the 1959 crown. The 1959 title with Pillion also earned them Overall NEMA Championship honors, the first for Stone.

Ed is also widely credited with having the first speed shop specifically dedicated to auto racing. New England Auto Racing Equipment was based out of Cambridge, MA and was a distributor of many of the performance parts of the day.

He was inducted into the NEAR Hall of Fame in a special Pioneers induction ceremony in 2012.
