Northern NASCAR Circuit

The Northern NASCAR Circuit was originally a 5-track circuit that included Thunder Road Speedbowl, Catamount Stadium and Devil’s Bowl Speedway in VT, Plattsburgh Raceway in NY and Sanair Speedway in Saint Pie, Quebec, Canada.

It was soon paired down to a majority of the races being held at Catamount and Thunder Road, both of which were under the direction in part by Ken Squier. The races were NASCAR sanctioned and points were awarded towards both the Northern NASCAR circuit as well as the NASCAR Late Model Sportsman National Championship.

When Tom Curley began promoting Catamount Stadium in 1978, he soon realized the special events were more profitable than the weekly events. This not only led to Catamount transitioning to a special events track in the 1980’s, but the Northern NASCAR Circuit being revamped into a traditional touring series separate from NASCAR’s Late Model Sportsman division. This resulted in the debut of the NASCAR North Tour 1979.

Every Northern NASCAR Circuit Champion has been inducted to the NEAR Hall of Fame.
