Eddie West

Edward E. West began driving in the Bomber divisions at Westboro and Brookline speedways. When he made the jump to super modifieds, he found success rather quickly, earning Rookie of the Year honors at both Pines Speedway & Hudson Speedway in 1962. The following year he won the Super Modified Championships at both tracks.

He competed at tracks up and down the East coast, from New Brunswick, Canada to West Palm Beach, Florida. He competed regularly at Hudson, Oswego, Dover, Lee and Epping. He also ran at Thompson, Seekonk, Stafford, and Westboro. Eddie is well known behind the wheel of his own #61 jr. supermodified. He also drove Vic Miller’s #11, Frank Barthell’s #55, and Buster Taylor’s #91 during his career.

Eddie won the final super modified races run at both Westboro and Vero Beach, Florida. He took down the Can-Am Classic at Lee Raceway in 1966, and won the Star Speedway Classic three times in 1966, 1973 and 1975.

West won the track championship at Pines Speedway in Groveland, Mass. in 1963, then repeated in 1964. He also took down the Hudson Speedway Championship the same year. Eddie is a six time track champion at the Star Speedway, winning titles in 1969, 1970, 1973-75 and 1980.

“Westie” became a charter member of the New England Super Modified Racing Assoc. in 1965. He won back-to-back NESMA Championships in 1973-1974 and ranks second all time in NESMRA career wins with 106.

Eddie West passed away just over a year after his NEAR Hall of Fame induction on April 15, 2000.
