Charlie Webster was one of the pioneers of the New London-Waterford Speedbowl, winning during the track’s inaugural season of 1951. In total, he would win at least one feature in 17 of the track’s first 20 seasons.

He started out in the the Claiming Car division in the early 1950’s, but by the mid-1950’s he paired up with Billy Simons and they became the dominant team of the Non-Ford division. Charlie won the track championship in 1956, 1958 and 1959 driving the “Excavator Special” #9 coupe. He had back-to-back 11 win seasons in 1958-1959. His 41 career Non-Ford wins are a Speedbowl record.

By the 1960’s, he moved on to the Modified division. He is most known for his 8-year run driving Fred Beaber’s #716 coupe from 1961-1968. The won 29 features and the 1966 Modified Championship together. He won 4 races driving for Dick Brooks in 1969. Then in 1970 he returned to the Simons #9, replacing the retiring Don Collins after the season-opening event. Charlie won twice in June before retiring himself.

Charlie’s 77 career wins at the Speedbowl were second only to Collins when he retired and still rank in the Top 10. Charlie Webster passed away in 1995.
