Dick Garrett

One of Maine’s true racing pioneers, Dick Garrett, despite hobbled by polio, became a standout racer in norther New England. It was Beech Ridge Speedway that was his favorite haunt. Garrett won 7 Class A Championships included the first 3 in track history (1949-1951), a fourth one in 1955 and then back-to-back titles in 1970-1971.

In a career that stretches from 1948 through 1976, it’s estimated that Garrett visited victory lane over 250 times at various tracks. In 1950 alone, he won 5 track championships (Beech Ridge Speedway, Lewiston Fairgrounds, Sanford Speedway, Dover Speedway and West Peabody Speedway.

A charter member of the Maine State Stock Car Association, Dick remained active as president and board member. He was a 2004 inductee to the Maine Motorsports Hall of Fame.

Garrett passed away on July 25, 2005.
