Born in St. Hyacinthe, Quebec in Canada, Henri “Red’ Barbeau became the pride of Woonsocket, Rhode Island. The colorful competitor was a familiar figure in New England stock car racing from the cut-down era into the early 1970’s.
Highlights from his resume include a win at Pinecrest Speedway in Toronto during the 1959 season and the 1973 Late Model Championship at Seekonk Speedway in MA. In between, he was probably most remembered for piloting the Devereauz/Auclair #L1 coupe.
In addition to Seekonk, he earned victories at other Massachusetts tracks such as Westboro Speedway, The Pines Speedway, West Peabody Speedway and Norwood Arena. He also won at Lonsdale Speedway in Rhode Island.
Barbeau passed away on September 22, 1982 at the age of 57.
