Richie Evans Memorial 100

The Richie Evans Memorial 100 was created in 1986 to pay tribute to 9-time NASCAR Modified Champion Richie Evans who was killed at Martinsville Speedway in October of 1985. He is widely considered the greatest modified racer in history and was inducted posthumously as part of NEAR Hall of Fame’s inaugural class of 1998.

The Richie Evans Memorial has become the marquee event for the modifieds during the annual World Series, most commonly the last race of the week for them.

Evans was a dominant force at New Smyrna. He won 6 of the first 9 World Series Modified Championships. For his last championship in 1984, he only competed in 6 of the 7 races, but won all 6 to win the title. Richie won 38 races at the World Series from 1976-1984. At the time of his passing, it was 28 more wins than any other modified driver.

Matt Hirschman has won the Evans Memorial race a record 7 times. Ted Christopher won it 5 times and Ryan Preece is a 3-time winner. In addition to Christopher & Preece, other New Englanders to win the race include Rick Fuller, Dave Berghman, Rob Summers & Ron Silk.
