Russ Wood is an undeniable legend in supermodified racing, but it was in the Street Stock division at Hudson Speedway where he got his start in racing. He would also compete at Star Speedway in the stock division, scoring wins at both tracks.
Eventually moving to the supermodifieds by the mid-1980’s, Wood earned track championships at Star Speedway in 1988, 1989 & 2000 and won the prestigious Star Speedway Classic a record seven different times (1997, 1999, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2011, 2012).
During his time with the International Super Modified Association (ISMA), Wood won won a record eight series championships (1991, 1994, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2002, 2010, 2011). He also collected 54 feature wins, 2nd on the series’ career wins list. He competed regularly at Oswego Speedway in NY from 1992-1994 where he won 5 times against the best in the business. He also won the Sandusky Classic in OH four times in his career.
He earned the Super Modified Championship at Lee USA Speedway in 1996 with an incredible 18 wins. His greatest season is arguably 1997 when he won 14 of the 18 races he entered and never finished worse than 4th over the entire season.
A fan-favorite thoughout most of his career, Wood has 12 Most Popular Driver Awards to his credit. A bad accident at Star Speedway in 2013 forced him into retirement, but made a memorable return in Howie Lane’s car at the 2017 Star Classic when he started last and finished 6th to the delight of the crowd.
