Tony Mordino was a polarizing figure in the early days of stock car racing. He was rough n’ tumble, super aggressive on the track, booed as much as he was cheered and won a lot of races.

Mordino was strong at Plainville Stadium, once winning 7 straight features. This prompted Joe Tinty to offer a $500 bounty for anyone to stop the streak (won by Ed Flemke). Mordino won 10 races at Plainville during the 1961 season.

He also visited West Haven Speedway, Thompson Speedway and the Waterford Speedbowl during his career.

Mordino’s last race was the inaugural Thompson 300, when he put up a Top 10 finish after starting 50th.

Tony passed away in 1999 at the age of 68. He was inducted into the NEAR Hall of Fame in a special Pioneers induction ceremony in 2012.
