Tony “Jap” Membrino was a force at Plainville Stadium, known for his aggressive style of racing and colorful personality. His long career started in 1948 and lasted for 3 decades.
Jap won back-to-back track championships at Plainville in 1964-1965. His best season was arguably 1969, when he captured 9 straight feature wins en route to his 3rd track title.
Membrino had success at other tracks, taking down wins at West Haven Speedway and Riverside Park Speedway. His last win came back at Plainville Stadium during a 100 lap open competition event in May of 1977.
There were few racers as colorful or as controversial as Jap Membrino, and fewer still won with such authority. Jap Membrino passed away on February 21, 2024, he was 90 years old.
