Al Hammond in the infamous black & gold #1 started his racing career at Oxford Plains Speedway in 1964, with his first career win coming the following year on July 4, 1965. He would go on to race for 48 years at Oxford, compiling 81 feature wins and 3 Late Model Championships in 1970, 1973 and 1974. He also scored 3 Triple Crown titles (1967, 1970, 1973)

While Oxford was his home track, he ventured out to other tracks in the northeast, scoring another 10 feature wins. He won every time he raced at Arundel Speedway. You could have also found his familiar #1 at Beech Ridge Speedway, Wiscasset Speedway, Speedway 95 and Unity Speedway in his home state. He also competed at Catamount Stadium, Bryar Motorsports Park, Plainville Stadium, Stafford Speedway and Thompson Speedway.

Hammond competed in the Permatex 300 at Daytona International Speedway in 1971. His longevity lends to the numerous series and marquee events he’s competed in over the years, including competing on the NASCAR North Tour, NASCAR Busch North Series, American Canadian Tour and the PASS North Series. He’s also has 11 Oxford 250 starts.

Al Hammond was inducted into the Maine Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2009 and served on the Board of Directors of the Maine Vintage Race Car Association. He passed away on January 16, 2014 at the age of 70.
