Moose Hewitt
Competitor
CLASS OF 2016
George “Moose” Hewitt Jr was a tough competitor in anything he participated in. At a young age, he was an amateur boxer, then later moved to motocross competition.
It wasn’t until his early 30’s that he moved to stock cars. He first found success in the Bomber division at the New London-Waterford Speedbowl in 1966, scoring a pair of wins in a car he built himself.
He would later moved to the Modifieds, first at the Speedbowl, eventually deciding to race the NASCAR circuit at tracks all over the northeast. During this time he scored a pair of wins at Thompson Speedway in 1970. He also won four times at Stafford Speedway, including the Winston 100 in 1975.
He returned to his home track on the Connecticut shoreline in the late 1970’s and became one of the shoreline oval’s most consistent runners. He won 5 Modified Championships at the Speedbowl in 8 seasons (1977-1978, 1981-1982, 1984). He also had entertaining rivalry with Bob Potter at the time.
Moose won races into the 1990’s while he was in his 60’s driving both Modifieds and Late Models. He passed away during the off-season prior to the 1997 season.
