Joey Kourafas had success at a young age, earning him the nickname “Kid Kourafas”. In 1974, He teamed up with Bob Curtis and won 17 races in a Chrysler kit car enroute to the Northern NASCAR Circuit Championship, the Late Model Sportsman Champion at Airborne Speedway (NY) as well as the Maine and Vermont state championships.
It was also during that 1974 season, at just 21 years of age, Kourafas won the inaugural Oxford 250. He started 19th in a 38 car field driving Bob Curtis’s car against New England’s top talent.
He competed on the old NASCAR North Tour during it’s entire existence from 1979-1985, winning 4 times in ’85. When NASCAR returned to New England in 1987 as the Busch North Series, Kourafas was the inaugural champion. He won 3 times on the tour from 1987-1992. He also made some starts on the Busch Grand National (now Xfinity) Series, scoring a pair of career-best 3rd place finishes in 1987 and 1990 (both at Oxford).
In the 2010’s, he spent time as a crew member for Richard Savary’s #99 modified team.
