Dick Armstrong
Car Owner
CLASS OF 2005
As a modified car owner, Dick Armstrong competed at just about every track in New England. He was a past president of NEDOC, the New England Drivers and Owners Club. Competing with the familiar #1, Dick is credited (or some may say blamed) for bringing big money sponsorship into modified racing.
Armstrong won the track championship at the Norwood Arena in 1969 with Fred Schulz, the last year Modifieds competed on a weekly basis at the famed Massachusetts oval..
But it was with Geoff Bodine as his driver that Armstrong enjoyed his most success as a car owner. Together took down Modified Championships at Stafford Speedway in 1975, ’76, and ’78. They also won Yankee All Star League Championships in 1976 and ’78, sweeping all 7 events during the latter season. They also won 3 of the first 4 Thompson 300 events, multiple Cardinal Classics at Martinsville Speedway in the 1970’s and 10 races at the New Smyrna World Series.
The 1978 season resulted in a record-breaking 55 wins, in a season that helped propel Bodine into his successful NASCAR Cup Series career.
As a car owner, Dick Armstrong helped to organize owners & drivers to give them more of a voice with promoters & sanctioning bodies. Dick pitched one of his ideas to NASCAR, convincing them that the modifieds should have their own touring series.
