Phil Libby began his racing career in 1949 when Beech Ridge Speedway opened. In the 1960 season, he won 21 of the 27 races held at the track. That same year he also won the track championship at Oxford Plains Speedway. In 1961, he won the Beech Ridge championship again. Bob started racing in 1954. Both Libby brothers were known for both their success on the track and their racing style that brought fans into the stands each week. The Libby brothers also raced frequently at Unity Speedway, Hudson Speedway and Lee Raceway.
Bob was a standout in super modifieds, winning the 1966 New England Dirt Track Championship.
Bob Libby was President of the Maine State Stock Car Racing Association for an amazing 15 terms, which in its early days was equivalent in stature as NASCAR was in the south. He was also a past president of the Oxford Plains Speedway Association and instrumental in the track’s transformation to an asphalt track. He was also Director of Competition at Beech Ridge Speedway from 1990-2005.
Phil Libby passed away on February 10, 2006 at the age of 78.
