George Weaver

Born in 1911 in Newport, RI, George Weaver was a founding father of the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA). He helped organize the first speed event at Thompson Speedway in 1945 and in 1952, he designed & built the original Thompson road course. It was hailed as American’s first closed-circuit, purpose built road course facility. He remained involved with the Thompson road course until 1967, bringing a host of established racers to the facility during his tenure.

As a driver, Weaver won the ARCA driver championship in 1939. He competed in the inaugural race at Watkins Glen in 1948 and won the Seneca Cup in 1949. He won again in 1951 beating John Fitch and in 1956 became the first 4-time winner at Watkins Glen.

Weaver was known as a good driver and a master mechanic. George Weaver passed away on February 28, 1970 a few days shy of his 59th birthday.
