Just a mention of the name George Pendergast usually brings smiles to those who remember him competing in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Known as “The Clown Prince of Racing”, he was simply fun to be around at the race track.
During his career, he earned a Sportsman Championship at Albany-Saratoga Speedway in Malta, NY. He has 11 career wins at the New London-Waterford Speedbowl, a track where he once dressed in drag to compete in the Powder Puff Derby to prank the female drivers.
His last win came in 1967 when he memorably bested Richie Evans at Utica-Rome Speedway in NY.
In 1981, he briefly operated Wiscasset Speedway in Maine under the name Lincoln County Speedway. George Pendergast passed away in 1991.
