Ted Christopher

Competitor
CLASS OF 2018

Ted Christopher was one of the most polarizing personalities in modified racing. He was both booed & cheered throughout his career, was outspoken & controversial and wasn’t never afraid to be aggressive on the race track. And he won hundreds of races.

Ted and his twin brother Mike started racing go-karts in Pomfret, CT before moving to the upstart SK Modified division at Stafford Speedway in the mid-1980’s. He scored his first victory in May of 1986 and then his first SK Modified Championship in 1987. He also started racing at Thompson Speedway and the Waterford Speedbowl and was crowned NASCAR Tri-Track Series Champion in 1987, which was based on accumulative points amongst all 3 NASCAR tracks in Connecticut at the time.

Ted became one of the best ever at Stafford Speedway. He was a record 9-time SK Modified Champion (1987, 1996, 2000, 2001, 2004, 2007, 2009, 2012, 2014). He is also the all-time career wins leader at the famed oval with 131 overall victories. He also won the Spring Sizzler 6 times – first in 1988 (the only time it was an SK Modified race) and then in 2002-2003 and 2008-2010 on the NASCAR Modified Tour.

At Thompson Speedway, he had more impressive success. 5 Track Championships (1988, 1989, 2000, 2002, 2010) and a record 99 victories. He also had 43 wins at the Waterford Speedbowl (including in a NEMA Midget and Pro-4 Modified) and won the 1992 SK Modified Championship there driving Ron Berndt‘s #54.

He won back-to-back NASCAR Weekly Racing Series New England Region Championships in 2000-2001, the latter capped with the NWRS National Championship as well.

He scored a record 43 modified wins during World Series of Racing at New Smyrna Speedway and 9 series championships, 8 driving for car owner Joe Brady.

On the NASCAR Modified Tour, scored 42 victories and was crowned the 2008 series champion. He also made 92 starts in NASCAR’s Busch North Series, scoring 10 wins. Christopher made starts on all 3 of NASCAR’s national series.

He won at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in both NASCAR Modifieds and the Busch North Series. He also won in both series at the road course track in Watkins Glen, NY. Other New England tracks where he visited victory lane include Star Speedway, Monadnock Speedway and at the Providence Civic Center in a indoor TQ Midget race in 2011 & 2012.

Ted was flying to Riverhead Raceway on Long Island, NY on September 16, 2017 when the plane crashed on the Connecticut coast, killing Ted and the pilot.
