Greg Sacks

Competitor
CLASS OF 2015

A Long Island, NY native, Greg Sacks was a standout at both Islip Speedway and Riverhead Raceway, winning 1970 Rookie of the Year honors at the latter. He drove his own equipment through the 1978 season, eventually heading to New England in the 1980’s. And then when he teamed up with Ernie Wilsberg for the 1982 season that he became a dominate force in modified racing.

That incredible season, Sacks started things off by capturing the New Smyrna World Series of Asphalt Racing championship in February by winning 6 of the 8 races, including the first 3. At Stafford, he won 12 of 21 races on his way to capturing Modified Championship.

His big wins that year included Stafford’s Spring Sizzler, Labor Day 200 & Fall Final 100, the Thompson 300 & World Series 50, the Race of Champions at Pocono Raceway, the Dogwood Classic at Martinsville Speedway and a 150 lapper at Oswego Speedway in NY.

Other notable career wins include the 1980 Busch 100 at Westboro Speedway, Thompson Ice Breaker (1983) and another Spring Sizzler win in 1983.

He moved down south and debuted full time on the NASCAR Cup Series in 1984 in a family owned car. The following year he scored an upset win for DiGard Racing in the Firecracker 400 at Daytona International Speedway. It was the last of the 43 career NASCAR Cup Series wins for DiGard. Sacks had won in a modified at Riverhead Speedway just 2 weeks earlier.

Greg remained a R&D driver for many race teams on both the Cup Series and Grand National (now Xfinity) series throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s. He also scored a Busch Grand National series win in 1996 at Talladega driving for Gary Bechtel.
