Lew Boyd
Competitor, Car Owner, Promoter, Publisher
CLASS OF 2015
As a competitor, Lew Boyd compiled 33 feature wins during his career. He won on both asphalt tracks like Hudson Speedway and dirt tracks like Lakeville Speedway.
He famously joined forces with Dick Berggren & Bruce Cohen in 1972 and convinced Stafford Speedway owner Jack Arute to let them promote an event they dubbed ‘The Spring Sizzler‘. The goal was for them to make enough money to fund their own racing operation. It was a huge success, with a huge crowd & car count despite a gloomy forecast.
The Arute family bought the rights to the event the next season and continue the Sizzler as Stafford’s signature season opening event to this day.
Boyd formed Coastal 181, which eventually became on of the biggest publishing firms for its auto racing content. There are books in their catalog on legendary racers like Richie Evans, Bugsy Stevens, Dave Dion, Ed Flemke, Ron Bouchard, Jim Shampine, Lou Lazzaro and Billy Greco among others. Lew himself has penned books on Bill Wimble, Fonda Speedway and the Boehler Race Team.
Lew was the recipient of the prestigious Frank Maratta Award for outstanding contribution to auto racing in 2003.
