Ted Stack was from Quaker Hill, a suburb of Waterford, CT and a star at his hometown race track – The New London-Waterford Speedbowl. He began racing in 1953, the track’s 3rd season of operation, in the Non-Ford division and earned his first career win the following year. He would win the Non-Ford Championship in 1957 and again in 1960 when he won 14 races in the division. His 38 career Non-Ford wins are 2nd all-time in Speedbowl history.
He also raced Modifieds and won 32 times over his career and earned the 1961 Modified Championship driving Sharkey Gaudiosi‘s car. In an incredible stretch to start that season, Stack won 10 of the first 13 races held in the Modified and Non-Ford divisions combined, including the first 5 straight Modified races, and a 7 straight overall which included a sweep of both features in 3 straight weeks.
Also during 1961, Stack won twice at Stafford Speedway and competed in the Race of Champions at Trenton Speedway in NJ.. He finished his racing career at Thompson Speedway, winning 5 times from 1964-1967.
Ted Stack was a Army veteran of World War II. He died of cancer at the age of 72 on June 5, 2000.
